What is Instant Issue Digital Debit Card?

It is a feature within the Groton Bank app that allows accountholders to instantly access newly created debit cards digitally within their preferred digital wallet (Apple Wallet or Google Wallet). You can begin using the card immediately using Apple Pay or Google Pay while waiting for the physical card to arrive in the mail.

How do I set up my Instant Issue Digital Debit Card?

In your Groton Bank app on your mobile device, select the account tied to your debit card, then select ‘Card management’ (or navigate to the ‘Card management’ card on your Dashboard). Select the card you would like to add to your digital wallet, and at the bottom of the next screen you will see an option to add to Apple Wallet (iOS) or Google Wallet (Android). Tap this option, then follow the steps on the screen to complete setup.

Can I make purchases before receiving my physical card?

Yes. Once the newly issued card is pushed to a digital wallet, you can immediately make in-store contactless payments or online purchases anywhere that specific digital wallet is accepted. 

Can I make PIN-Based transactions?

You may not make PIN-based transactions until your new physical card is received, activated, and a PIN designated by calling 1-800-290-7893. You may make non-PIN credit-based transactions as soon as your card is added to your digital wallet (while it differs by terminal, this is usually done by selecting “Credit” as the payment type or bypassing the PIN entry screen on the terminal).

Can I make website purchases online with my Instant Issue Digital Debit Card?

Yes, but only in certain cases. Using your Instant Issue Digital Debit Card, you can make purchases on a website only if that site accepts “Apple Pay” or “Google Pay” directly and must be done using a device you added your Instant Issue Digital Debit Card to. You cannot make purchases on websites that require you to enter your card details manually until you have received and activated your physical debit card.

How is my Instant Issue Digital Debit Card secured?

Mobile payments using these digital wallets are the most secure way to use your debit card. The digital provisioning process utilizes what is called tokenization. Your actual card number is replaced by a unique digital token, ensuring the primary account number (PAN) is never exposed during transactions or stored directly on the user's device. Digital wallets also generate a dynamic, one-time security code (often called a cryptogram) for every individual transaction. Even if hackers somehow intercept this information, it is useless to them.

Also, digital wallets require active device authentication for every individual transaction. To authorize a payment, you must unlock the capability using either facial recognition, fingerprint scan or a secure PIN or passcode on your mobile device. So even if a thief steals your phone, they will be unable to trigger a payment.
